Abstract
Research on the influence of learning opportunities in business and economics in higher education on the development of subject-specific competency over the course of studies is scarce. In our study we analyze data of the WiwiKom project, which were gathered at 33 higher education institutions, to identify the ways in which students' competency in economics is influenced by individual and contextual factors. A multilevel analysis is conducted in which the hierarchical structure of the higher education system is taken adequately into consideration, thus allowing a non-confounded estimation of the influences of the learning opportunities perceived in higher education. Results indicate significant and inter-individual differences and are discussed comprehensively.
