Abstract
Austenitic submerged arc (strip electrode) and plasma (with two ″hot wire electrodes″ ) weld overlays were investigated to determine whether the relations between solidification, crystal formation, and textures established for foundry products can be applied to conditions in welding. This was confirmed for the direction of crystallization and the texture. An effect of welding speed on crystal orientation was shown to exist. The texture is associated with the crystal orientation, which also affects mechanical properties. The investigations wre performed on ferritic (22 NiMoCr 37) steel clad with stainless steel. An example of application would be nuclear reactor pressure vessels clad to make them corrosion resisting.
