Abstract
Factors influencing erosion on Alpine mountain meadows were investigated, using analysis of sampling data and selected series of 1955 to 1982 aerial photographs. Slope, aspect, and altitude were found to be the most important parameters. Under certain conditions, also length of slope, micro surface, structure of the terrain, form of use (presently or formerly being grazed), and small structural features such as livestock trails, pasture roads, and groups of woody plants play a role. Series of aerial photographs of the same sector, taken over a 20- to 30-year period, show the overriding influence of the weather: in winters with shifting snow masses, considerable erosion occurs on risk areas. Consequences for practical application are derived from the research results.
