Abstract

Determining a natural fire curve for fire in suspended ceilings and raised floors as well as determining the effect of imperfect seals of installations through ceilings or floors. An integration of flammable installations of the building services within hollow spaces of steel-concrete-composite slabs poses a problem for the unprotected construction regarding the fire protection requirements. In normal cases, such spaces in integrated slab systems, suspended ceilings and raised floors are not designed separately from the room. This leads often to an unfavourable design of the inner steel construction due to the room requirement. From small-scale fire tests, a natural fire scenario called “Fire in hollow spaces” is developed based on fire loads of electrical cables and typical boundary conditions of hollow spaces. Conclusively, this natural fire curve can provide a realistic design of the load-bearing steel structures. However, the effect of fire resistant seal of penetrating installations for a fire in room according to ISO fire curves on the temperature distribution in the hollow spaces needs to be considered. Especially interesting is also to what extent a fire in room will causes a fire in hollow spaces without seals. The results are based on two large-scale fire tests using ISO fire curve with different openingś sizes and locations in panels. Conclusively, a certain degree of imperfect seals will not lead to a fire in hollow spaces.
