Abstract

Due to a lower amount of rotating mass, island grids have a higher frequency sensitivity compared to the integrated grid. Even relatively small load steps (e.g. starting of electrical machines or switching of high loads) can excite the system and cause triggering of protective equipment, resulting in a break-down of the island grid. During the research project LINDA (Local Island Power Supply and Accelerated Grid Restoration with Distributed Generation Systems in Case of Large-Scale Blackouts) a concept for operating local island grids was developed. This concept does not require communication between the main power plant and other generating units and loads. Balancing supply and demand is done by using the characteristic electrical parameters frequency and voltage. To stabilize the island grid at dynamic excitations, a RoCoF triggered load bank sheds dummy-loads. This concept was tested in a simulation during the LINDA project. In this paper the successful implementation of this method in a laboratory setup is described.
