Abstract
The possibility of measuring materials reactions of parts subjected to fatigue tests, thermal loads, and corrosion and of correlating these reactions with crack-initiating mechanisms is considered. In this connection a number of methods are presented which allow early detection of crack-initiation phenomena. In the case of fatigue loading damage can frequently be detected in an early stage by surface changes. Given the necessary prerequisites, X-ray stress measurements can be of use in lifetime prediction. Likewise, the coherent light of a laser makes it possible to record surface changes. Under specific conditions acoustic emission analysis and the measurement of electric potential are suitable methods for early detection of damage. Finally, knowledge of the mechanisms of fracture formation and fracture propagation makes it possible to use the fracture surface as a sort of data store. By means of the information gained by this method on damage mechanisms it is possible to devise effective measures to prevent damage.
