Abstract
The study reported in this article considers the eye movements of 26 students as they intuitively solved contingency problems. We investigated if there is a difference in the fixation times of the four cells and if the strategies were related with the fixation times. Furthermore, saccades are considered in order to get results about information linking. Background of the study are research results in mathematics education about the estimation of the importance of the four cells and about strategies that were identified for solving contingency problems as well as dual process theories in psychological research, which describe how intuitive processes are controlled in favor of rational arguments. We observed different fixation times and different numbers of saccades related to problem-solving strategies. The results suggest to consider eye movements for further analysis of strategies in contingency problems.
