Abstract
Since various packaging materials such as aluminum-plastic laminates often cannot be sterilized by heat, disinfection is carried out with hydrogen peroxide (H//2O//2) or, recently, even by means of UV radiation, With UV sterilization it is important that the heat sealing properties are not impaired by the irradiation. To determine the relation between seam strength and UV irradiation, tests were carried out with aluminum-plastic laminates and also with lacquered aluminum foils and thin strip. The results show that the seam strength of irradiated samples is inferior to that of unirradiated ones and, in addition, is dependent on the heat sealing temperature. Furthermore, the resistance to tearing was found to change in a certain space of time after heat sealing.
