Abstract
Prior to aseptic filling of glass containers they must be sterilized efficiently. Besides treatments such as hydrogen peroxide sterilization or wet steam treatment, dry heat sterilization by flame may be applied for this purpose. Optimal conditions for sterilization rate and avoidance of glass breakage could be attained by using combined burners which flame the glass bottles from both inside and outside. At flame temperatures of about 1400°C a reduction of four powers of magnitude of B. subtilis spores required for aseptic filling could be ensured in about 9 sec.
