Abstract

Plastic surgeons have only recently started to concern themselves with endoscopic surgical techniques. Without abandoning the established treatment principles derived from conventional surgery, the new technological developments offer new ways of performing minimally invasive operations. The resulting benefits are: atraumatic technique, low complication rate: decreased scarring, less postoperative pain. These modern operation techniques have now been adopted by cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. Since plastic surgeons are rarely presented with preformed body cavities in their work, it has been necessary to develop special instruments for exposing the anatomical spaces in order to perform the operations. Technical advances have created a continuous flow of new indications for minimally invasive surgery and refinement of existing techniques. Although no long-term results have been published, the benefits for the patients are clearly recognisable.
