Abstract
Uterine fibroids may be treated with non-surgical approaches under certain circumstances . Medical treatments may be an alternative to hysterectomy, myomectomy or endometrial ablation, particularly in patients wishing organ preservation and/or attempting to become pregnant . However, no firm guidelines exist . This article summarises published evidence on the available medications and outlines indications and contraindications, effects and side effects of the two existing options . Depending on the severity of symptoms, treatment targets and necessary duration of medical treatment, progestins, combined oral contraceptives, GnRH analogues and selective progesterone receptor modulators (SPRMs) may be helpful . GnRH analogues and SPRMs can both reduce uterine volume and blood loss; however, GnRH analogues have more side effects and are less advantageous preoperatively .
