Abstract

For the design of screw conveyors, the German industrial standard DIN 15262 specifies a calculation rule that, however, only applies to certain operating ranges. To improve the cost-efficiency and capacity of screw conveyors, they are often operated at much higher screw speeds and filling degrees than specified in this standard. This allows, for example, the same volume capacity to be handled by smaller sized conveyors. However, this also results in a far more complex motion of the material in the conveyor. An accurate design of such conveyors is not possible on the basis of DIN 15262. In the scope of AiF Project No. 12453, experimental studies were conducted at a large-scale test plant at the Institute of Material Handling. Material Flow, Logistics (fml) of Munich University of Technology to determine empirical characteristic values for a range of different bulk materials and use these to improve the design of high-capacity screw conveyors.
