Abstract

Emergency scenarios of a re-entry vehicle due to control degradation are considered which is related to the blocking of a body flap. For improving the control capability in this scenario, the reaction control system is used to generate control moments in combination with the aerodynamic surfaces still operative. The propellant mass required by the reaction control system is minimized using an optimisation procedure. Results are presented for different cases concerning the blocked body flap position, the available amount of propellant mass and the number of thrusters as well as alternative landing sites.
