Abstract
The science of complex systems cuts across the particular domains, seeking principles and methods that can be applied to complex systems in general. Science is increasingly concerned with the artificial and the synthetic, and the science of complex systems is increasingly motivated by design. A better understanding of complexity and a better synergy between complexity and design will be essential for the design research and practice in the 21st century. There were three kinds of activities organised, corresponding to different objectives: Tutorials and Seminars, Workshops and Conferences, and Exhibitions. The objective of the workshop was different to the previous ones as the focus was to communicate with the complexity science community and collect together state-of-the-art research exploring the connections between complexity and design. One of the major outstanding problems in the science of complex systems is to find a way of representing the dynamics of multilevel systems.
