Abstract

Dowel embedment tests parallel-to-grain with softwood, European and tropical hardwood species were carried out. The specimens were tested at different moisture contents. The ductility of different species is discussed and the applicability of the EC5 equation is assessed. Furthermore, all test data were combined with data from literature in order to create a large database. A lower influence of the dowel diameter in comparison to the EC5 equation was observed and the EC5 equation seems to be punishing for species with higher densities. An adjustment of the density to 12% moisture content and an adjustment of embedment strength analogous to EN384 reduced the scatter considerably.
