Abstract

We investigated whether a connection exists between hormonal growth factors and pancreatic carcinoma. In 21 patients with advanced pancreatic cancer and 13 with other gastrointestinal neoplasms we evaluated HGH, IGF-1, IGFBP-3, thyroid hormones and the patients' survival. In patients with pancreatic cancer HGH (6.4 vs 1.8 mg/l) and IGFBP-3 (1.8 vs 1.0 mg/ml) were significantly elevated, while their survival was reduced (108.0 vs 299.7 days), the parameters showing a significant inverse correlation. HGH is elevated in advanced pancreatic cancer. The elevation is significantly correlated with a reduced patients' survival. It remains to be clarified, whether HGH is only a prognostic parameter or a pathogenetic agent.
