Electric field induced orientation of liquid crystals and optical absorption experiments

Abstract

A method is described to align bulk samples of liquid crystalline mixtures of cholesterol derivatives by a dc electric field. The oriented liquid crystal can serve as an anisotropic matrix for optical studies of oriented solute molecules.
