Abstract
The phase of concept development is a complex mental activity in terms of a creative problem solving process and therefore should be supported by particular tools. CAD as a comprehensive digital tool for design supports such problem solving rather insufficiently. For this reason an experimental study was carried out which investigated the use of freehand sketches and simple models by altogether 61 mechanical engineering students and professional designers. The results emphasise the essential meaning of sketching for concept development, since nearly every subject has used sketches, while almost no models were used. The experiments have also shown that sketches are capable of fulfilling different purposes, besides documentation they were particularly used for solution development.
