Abstract

Samples of unalloyed gray cast iron were subjected to various remelting heat treatments. It was found that the microstructure of the hardened boundary layer of the gray cast iron parts can be intensively affected by this treatment. In a wear test with a rolling load the variously treated boundary layers were compared with chilled cast iron. On the basis of damage analysis studies, conditions for the production of a microstructure with a high wear resistance are indicated.
