Abstract

Supplementary to previous investigations on small, clear specimens and to full-size bending tests, long term tension and compression tests on full-size European spruce specimens were carried out. A total of 212 specimens were subjected to constant load tests (stress level 14 N/mm2 and 21 N/mm2; loading time 6 months) and to ramp load tests (time to failure 10 s, 1 h and 240 or 360 h) under constant climate conditions (20°C, 65% r.h.). Both under tension and compression tests a pronounced duration of load effect was noticed particularly in the lower range of strength distribution. The test results support the assumption that no damage is caused unless the applied stress surpasses a stress ratio of roughly 50%.
