Abstract
Foster mare services try to bring orphaned foals together with mares that lost their foals. The results of one of these services, of which there are many in Germany, were evaluated over the last three years. In 98 search procedures on the part of horse owners for a suitable partner (mare or foal) for their horse, one was found in 67 cases (68.4 %). Contact only took place in 33 of these cases (49.3 %). Of these 33 cases, 25 contacts (75.8 %) developed positively, what means the mare accepted the strange foal and suckled it. Suggestions are made on how the efficiency of the voluntary foster mare services could be improved.
