Abstract

Hybrid propulsion is a viable solution to improve the fuel economy of road vehicles. The Optimised CVT Hybrid is a parallel hybrid driveline based on a two-range Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). Fuel savings of up to 30% compared with a conventional diesel-powered vehicle have been demonstrated, but the driveline also provides good drivability and high ride comfort. The starting process of the IC engine and shifting between the two speed ranges are performed without interruption of traction. The paper describes the driveline concept and presents experimental results on the powershift, the engine start, fuel consumption and energy balance.
