Abstract
The influence of variable inertia on bound states and on the penetrability of a potential barrier is studied in simple analytically soluble models and related to a scale transformation of the dynamical variable. It is shown that variable inertia may help to produce "shape isomers" even in the case of a very shallow "second valley" of the potential landscape.
