Abstract

The results of studies of various surface states of parts prior to carbonitriding are presented. The effects of detergent residues, prior oxidation and roughness depth on these surface states are considered. To clarify these effects, samples and parts are subjected to a fine-range analysis. Metallographic studies give information concerning the structure and morphology of the carbonitrided layers as a function of production-related residues. On the basis of the results obtained, a new detergent is developed.
