Abstract
Systematic reviews of controlled clinical trials of complementary medicine have been published in the last years with increasing frequency. This article discusses the following methodological steps and the respective problems of preparing and interpreting of such reviews: Dimensionality of the research question of a review; study selection and quality of the literature search; assessment of internal validity, clinical relevance, and appropriateness; transparence of the comparability of primary studies; summary and meta-analysis of primary study results.
