Abstract
The use of DNA as a chemical fuel is introduced and demonstrated that the free energy of hybridization of complementary oligonucleotides may be used to produce repetitive motion of a molecular machine. As such, the first DNA-fuelled devices are clocked around their operating cycle. This paper demonstrates essential elements of kinetic control of hybridization that permit operation of a free-running DNA-fuelled machine.
