Abstract
Towed sleds to assist divers in performing long observational traverses have been in use almost as long as SCUBA has been in existence. A newly designed "diving sled", towed by a skiff at speeds of about 2-4 knots and controlled vertically by two horizontal elevators (diving planes) permits two diving scientists to make direct underwater observations over relatively large areas. Diver-to-surface and surface-to-diver communication is made possible by an underwater telephone system, and the divers' observations can be tape-recorded directly. The mapping of a part of the island shelf off Kephallinia (Greece) demonstrates the utility of this diving sled.
