Abstract

In this paper, we propose new methods for wideband direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation and beamforming in wideband smart antennas based on Frequency-Domain Frequency-Invariant Beamformer (FDFIB). In receiving mode, the FDFIB plays a role as a wideband spatial f ilter transforming the signal from (antenna) element-space into beamspace. After that, the narrowband DOA methods can be applied in beam-space to estimate DOA of user, bythis approach the resolution threshold of DOA estimate is improved. Moreover, after obtaining direction information of the user, the FDFIB can be used to direct wideband signal toward the specified user in transmitting mode. The methods are able to operate with arbitraryan tenna arrayand wide bandwidth without preliminaryDO A estimate.
