N2 - Decision-making is a multifaceted phenomenon. Yet in design, many models describing decisionmaking and approaches to decision support are based on simplistic process models and assumptions. This paper reviews the literature surrounding both decision processes and decision support systems, before presenting the authors' own insights from a series of construction and engineering case studies. Based on an analysis of the literature and case study findings, a set of dimensions for classifying factors influencing decision situations is presented. Using this taxonomy the authors then structure the decision process as a dynamic and iterative activity before discussing its implications for decision support systems in design.
