Abstract
The echographic and angiographic diagnoses of 56 patients, suspected of having a space occupying process in the region of the kidney, were compared with the findings at operation. Echography was diagnostically reliable if the diameter of the process was more than 2 cm. It was limited by technically unsatisfactory representation, especially of the cranial renal portion, and was only of limited reliability with small encapsulated collections of fluid and with small processes of composition. All space occupying processes were localised by angiography. However, the differentiation between avascular tumors and cysts presented difficulties in some cases. The combination of both examination procedures led to greater diagnostic certainty, especially in cases of renal tumor, whereas it was not necessary in every case to use angiography to confirm the diagnoses of renal cysts, when these were unequivocally diagnosed by echography.
