Abstract

Up to now no proven data exists which could identify and describe the influence of exogenic, endogenic and genetic markers on the development of islet autoimmunity and type 1 diabetes during puberty. Identification of these factors is a crucial point for design and development of preventive therapies. These therapies are needed to reduce the incidence of type 1 diabetes in the long term. A main goal help prevent several medical, psychosocial and economic problems which often accompany type 1 diabetes could be achieved by decreasing the number of new cases of the disease. The prospective TEENDIAB study is to identify factors which influence the development of islet autoimmunity and type 1 diabetes during puberty.
