Abstract
Included in this study were 400 patients with suspected light-induced or light-provoked dermatoses. In 226 of them this could be confirmed. A polymorphous light eruption (PLE) was found in 60% of these patients. Chronic actinic dermatitis (CAD) was found in 11%, a photo contact allergy dermatitis in 8%, light-provoked atopic eczema in 5% and light urticaria in 4%. 77% of the patients suffering from PLE were female, the mean age was 36.4 ± 15.4 years. Provocation with high doses of UV-A resulted in induction of isomorphous PLE lesions in 68% of the tested patients. The median of the minimal erythema dose (MED) with UV-B was 140 mJ/cm2, within the normal range. Compared with a control group consisting of the patients without confirmed light-induced dermatosis, the following parameters were found significantly more often: female sex, young age, positive family history, skin type I or II according to Fitzpatrick, positive correlation with sun exposure, seasonal distribution of symptoms and hardening phenomenon.
