Abstract
In the context of an inventory of specific stands in the Forest Experimental Area Grafrath results achieved from 2 Caucasian fir stands (Abies nordmanniana ((STEV.) SPACH)) are reported. The younger stand (47 year) showed a stock of 375 m 3/ha in spring 1995 whereas the stock of the older 87-year old stand was 548 m 3/ha. Compared to the Grand fir (Abies grandis (DOUGL.) LINDL.) the Caucasian firs exhibited a significant lower height development. In comparison to other foreign tree species classified at the same time the round wood quality of the Caucasian firs was assessed as middle to low. Due to the different recommendations in literature it was concluded that investigations on the provenance of the Caucasian fir are necessary.
