Abstract

5 patients with type III hyperlipoproteinemia were examined. 4 of 5 patients showed simple xanthomas of the hand lines and the finger joint folds. All patients had an increased total cholesterol (average value 705 mg%) and triglyceride (average value 1100 mg%) content. The cholesterol/triglyceride ratio was between 0.5 and 1.2. All patients also showed a wide beta band in the lipoprotein electrophoresis and a floating beta lipoprotein in the ultracentrifuge examination. The results of the study are largely consistent with the findings in the literature. The clinical picture of type III hyperlipoproteinemia is discussed, based on the literature and the personal cases.
