Abstract

In Germany at present about 30,000 children and adolescents under 19 years of age are afflicted by type 1 diabetes. The tendency is increasing and the age of onset of the disease is sinking. Autoimmune reactions and a selective destruction of insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas play key roles in the disease. A separate research group in the German Center for Diabetes Research [Deutschen Zentrum für Diabetesforschung (DZD)] is assigned to this topic. One objective is the early diagnosis of type 1 diabetes; another one is to promote the development of preventative strategies in order to guard against diabetes in childhood and to optimize treatment options.
