Abstract
In 9 patients undergoing surgery of the stomach, serum cholesterol and triglycerides were determined and the fatty acids of serum cholesterol esters were analyzed by gas liquid chromatography before and 20 min after starting anesthesia and 3 and 6 days after operation. The levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in serum decreased slightly during anesthesia, but were more pronounced in the days after operation. Ester quotient remained constant. The essential fatty acids in cholesterol esters of the serum hardly changed. The percent value of linoleic acid decreased slightly, the percent value of arachidonic acid increased only transiently. Causes and importance of the results for postoperative parenteral nutrition are discussed.
