Abstract

The drainage of the thoracic duct in the human over a period of 1 wk causes not only an effective decrease of the peripheral lymphocyte count and gammaglobulins but also changes the ultrastructure of lymphoid cells. Since these alterations can be observed even after the discontinuation of the drainage it can be concluded that the immunosuppression continues after the end of the lymph withdrawal. This operative immunosuppression can be utilized without great risk especially in patients with incompatibilities to other immunosuppressive procedures.
