Abstract

Ever since biomechanical studies proved the importance of the medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) as the main passive restraint against patellar dislocation, reconstruction of the MPFL has become an established surgical therapy and numerous techniques have recently been described [3, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 13]. As a result of clinical and biomechanical examinations, it seems reasonable to reconstruct the MPFL according to its sail-shaped anatomy to restore stability in extension as well as in flexion [1]. Using a double-bundle technique rotation of the patella can be avoided and subjective persistent feelings of instability can be avoided. Despite the fact that numerous techniques have been described, an aperture fixation technique providing immediate stability and the possibility of an early rehabilitation with full range of motion, has not yet been described.
