Abstract
Founding the field of dermatology during the age of enlightenment was a highly innovative step that allowed the characterization and categorization of skin diseases. Since then, dermatology has repeatedly been the driving force for innovations and, thus, rightly occupies the entire spectrum of the subject with proven experts. At this point, the development and deeper understanding of the skin as an integrating immune organ and the importance of the cutaneous immune system for diseases and therapies should be emphasized. The ever increasing stratification of inflammatory skin diseases will allow a much more individualized therapy selection in the near future, using an individual inflammatory pattern of the skin as a basis for the selection of the specific therapeutic agent. However, the control of immune responses of the skin is also of great importance for the defense against cancer and infectious diseases, and percutaneous vaccination should be pursued more vigorously as a more potent counter-model to intramuscular vaccination, especially in times of the pandemic.
