Abstract
The development of experimental and theoretical concepts dealing with the problem of inherent aircraft stability is discussed on the basis of published literature. Starting with the work of G. Cayley at the beginning of the nineteenth century, this development is reviewed up to the period around 1910 when theoretical solutions, which became fundamental to modern flight mechanics, were published.
