Abstract
The sporadic engine fault misfire is used as example to evaluate the diagnosis status of a modern engine management system in view of failure isolation i.e. the determination of the exact location of the fault. The poor reproducibility of sporadic faults in the garage complicates the fault isolation process. For that reason the requirement results to do the fault isolation onboard in the engine management system. To start with the diagnosis status of an engine management system is summarized in an evaluation matrix. Further analysis of the matrix gives indication of existing diagnosis deficiencies and the potential to extend the onboard diagnosis functions in view of failure isolation.
