Abstract
Laser treatment of diabetic retinopathy prevents blindness. Early detection of proliferative diabetic retinopathy and macular edema is particularly important. The patient must attend the ophthalmologist for fundus examination on a regular basis. Interdisciplinary collaboration of general practitioners, internists, and opthalmologists is crucial to treat concomitant diseases such as arterial hypertension, hyperlipidemia and diabetic nephropathy.
