A series of public ations in newly organized augmented and mixed reality workshops and symposia doc u-mented these trends. Bec ause governments and the entertainment industry funded muc h of the ac ademic researc h, many public ations foc used on topic s that interested these groups. This meant that public ations c overing AR’s industrial applic ations were largely lac king. The largest industrial AR (IAR) c onsortium was funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Educ ation and Researc h organization, whic h supported the Augmented Reality for Development, Produc tion, and Servic ing (known by the German ac ronym ARVIKA). AS a consortium that inc luded numerous industrial partners, ARVIKA’s emer-genc e is an important milestone in establishing IAR’s importance and attracting industries—in particular, the German automobile industry—to its applications.

N2 - Currently, the IAR community is emerging from the phase of defining use cases and building simple prototypes. For designing and building simple killer apps, AR researchers now need to take several related steps. They need to considered marketing and commercialization aspects of the posssible AR solutions as they define the right academic and industrial partnerships and develop clear dissemination plans.
