Abstract
The isotope effect on the vibronic spectrum of naphthalene has been investigated under conditions of high resolution, enabling the resolution of individual vibronic states. Comparing the isotope effect for fixed vibronic states leads to an unexpected smoothing which is taken as evidence for a triplet communicating system, even though the singlet state is clearly not communicating.
