Determination of in-situ length changes of the glenohumeral ligaments during abduction

Abstract

The function of the glenohumeral ligament (GHL) was quantified experimentally by evaluating elongation and laxity in the ligaments with respect to Lo during abduction. A high degree of variability was found in the reference length of the each GHL which agrees with previous studies. The superior GHL (SGHL) exhibited the greatest length at the neutral position. The wrap around length for the middle GHL (MGHL) varied little during abduction while the anterior bands of the inferior GHL complex (AB-GHLC) steadily increased during the initial 30 degrees of abduction, then plateaued until maximum abduction. These observations support past studies which demonstrated a stabilizing role for the ligaments in abduction.
