Degradation of optical WDM-transmission-systems due to nonlinear IM/FM conversion

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

The nonlinear degradation of optical wavelength-division multiplexed transmission systems due to Cross Phase Modulation (CPM) is investigated theoretically, using a conventional single-mode fiber in the range of 1.55 μm. it is shown that the nonlinear interference of the copropagating channels leads to nonnegligible additive frequency,-noise in each channel of the transmission system. The results calculated at various data rates show that CPM could be a limiting factor for angle modulated channels, if both angle modulated channels and intensity modulated channels are used in the WDM system.
