Abstract

The reaction leading to deactivation of La-X zeolites in isobutane/2-butene alkylation was studied. In the beginning of the reaction, carbenium ions were formed on Brønsted acid sites. After 1.9 hr on stream these parameters become constant, and quantitative conversion of 2-butene was observed. The carbon content increased strongly due to the formation of polymerization products on Lewis acid sites outside the zeolite pores. The conversion of 2-butene started decreasing rapidly after 12.9 hr on stream rapidly. Analysis of the carbonaceous deposits showed that bicyclic compounds with alkyl side chains were the dominant species formed on the catalyst.
