Abstract

With today's requirements, it is very difficult to plan conventional hydropower plants in Middle Europe that are economical or even capable of approval. Against this background of higher ecological standards, new concepts need to be developed that are more efficient. At the TU Munchen, research is underway to develop a power plant that can be completely submerged. Using a horizontal inlet plane and situating the machinery in a shaft in front of the weir, the volume of the structure can be greatly reduced. An opening with a gate is made in the weir. Tests on a physical scale model have shown, that alongside hydraulic criteria, this concept fulfills the requirements for fish protection.
