Abstract

At the department of surgery of the hand of the Surgical Clinic of the University of Munich, 718 operations for carpal tunnel syndrome were performed between 1970 and 1979. 9% of these operations were carried out because of recurrence c.q. persistent symptoms; most of these patients had previously been operated elsewhere. Analysis of the reoperation revealed that in most cases, errors had been committed in the: 1) preoperative clinical examination; 2) conditions of surgery; 3) surgical technique; 4) postoperative treatment. The problem is discussed critically and ways of avoiding errors are pointed out.
