Abstract
We tested whether horses in free running stables urinate less in resting areas when special places for elimination are provided. We examined six groups of horses ranging in size from 5 to 15 animals. Urination behaviour was recorded on video, making note of horse, frequency and location in the stable. Behavioural patterns immediately before and after urination were also noted. Observations were made on numerous non contiguous days. The horses urinated 5.5 time per day in average, with a clear preference for the resting area. This tendency was reduced when special elimination areas (filled with sawdust) were provided. Urination occurred most frequently after intake of roughage. In order to minimise urination in resting areas, we recommend that these areas not be filled with edible material.
